TOPIC: YOUR PRAYERS ARE NOT MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE WORD OF GOD

BY T. O. BANSO

If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you[a] will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you” (John 15:7 New King James Version).

Many people have yet to realize the truth that their prayer is not more important than the Word of God. What you want to tell God is not more important than what He wants to tell you. If you will listen to what God wants to tell you, you may not need to tell Him what you are so eager to tell Him!

If you read and study the Word of God, and if you listen attentively to His Word that you’re hearing, you may discover that you’ll have fewer prayer points to pray. The Word of God will provide a direct answer to the issues that are bothering you. Don’t rush to pray; listen to God first.

Prayer is very important, but many times, people ask amiss when they don’t know the Word of God. If you ask contrary to the Word of God, God will not violate His word to grant your request! There are prayer points that people pray that are unnecessary because God will either never answer them or He has already answered them. God won’t grant your requests motivated by covetousness, envy, wickedness, etc. James 4:2-3 says, You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures” (New International Version).

The Word of God is more important than your prayers. John 15:7 says,If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you” (New King James Version). Wise people spend much time with the Word of God, which shows their regard for God. Spending such a time in God’s word makes their prayers very effective. Giving priority to reading, studying, hearing, and meditating on the Word of God makes the time they spend in prayer well utilized. They pray with the correct knowledge of the Word of God. They may fast and pray day and night, but everything they do is guided by and founded on the Word of God.

Make sure you don’t pray ignorantly. Align your life with the Word of God. Find out what God has promised you and make a demand on His Word. Don’t engage in prayer and fasting that will amount to punishing yourself just because you have failed to listen to God! Don’t promote your prayer and fasting above the Word of God!

If you want God to have regard for your prayer, have regard for His Word. It’s not the long hours you spend in prayer, your long prayer list or all the physical activities that you engage in, in the place of prayer that will bring you answers. God is the one who answers prayer. He determines the prayers He answers, and He has stated in the Bible the conditions for answered prayers.

Here are some conditions: Delight yourself in the Lord. If you delight yourself in the Lord, He shall give you the desires of your heart (Psalm 37:4). Abide in the Lord and let His words abide in you (John 15:7-8). Obey His Word. Don’t ignore His Word (1 John 3:22; Proverbs 28:9). Forgive others (Mark 11:25-26). Ask according to the will of God (1 John 5:14-15). Ask in the name of Jesus (John 14:13-14). Be specific (Matthew 20:29-34; Mark 10:46-52; Luke 18:35-43). Have the right motive (James 4:3). Don’t harbour sin in your heart (Psalm 66:18). Pray in the Spirit (Ephesians 6:18). Ask in faith (Mark 11:22-24). Help the hungry and the afflicted (Isaiah 58:9-10).  Be persistent and patient (Luke 18:1-8).

When God called Samuel as He had called him three times earlier, 1 Samuel 3:10b says, “And Samuel answered, “Speak, for Your servant hears” (New King James Version). Pay attention to the Word of God; don’t offer the prayers of a fool! Don’t be too eager to say, “Lord, hear for your servant speaks” when you’ve not first said, “Lord speak, for your servant hears.” Ecclesiastes 5:1 says, “Walk prudently when you go to the house of God; and draw near to hear rather than to give the sacrifice of fools, for they do not know that they do evil” (New King James Version).

Know and obey the Word of God if you want God to answer your prayers. Your prayers are not more important than the Word of God. The Word of God is the will of God. And 1 John 5:14 says, “Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us” (New King James Version). Pray but let the Word of God be more important to you. If you do, you will pray according to the Word of God and your prayer will be more effective.

TAKE ACTION!

If you are not born again, you need to give your life to Jesus now. I urge you to take the following steps: *Admit that you are a sinner, and you cannot save yourself, and repent of your sins. *Confess Jesus as your Lord and Saviour. *Renounce your past way of life – your relationship with the devil and his works. *Invite Jesus into your life. *As a mark of seriousness to mature in the faith, start attending a Bible-believing and Bible-teaching church. There they will teach you how to grow in the Kingdom of God.

Kindly say this prayer now: O Lord God, I come unto You today. I know I am a sinner, and I cannot save myself. I believe that Jesus is the Son of God who died on the cross to save me and God raised Him on the third day. I repent of my sins and confess Jesus as my Lord and Saviour. I surrender my life to Jesus now and invite Him into my heart. By this prayer, I know I am saved. Thank You, Jesus, for saving me and making me a child of God.

I believe you have said this prayer from your heart. Congratulations! You will need to join a Bible-believing and Bible-teaching church in your area where they will teach you how to live your new life in Christ Jesus. I pray that you flourish like a palm tree and grow like a cedar of Lebanon. May you grow into Christ in all things and become all God wants you to be. I will be glad to hear from you. The Lord be with you.

PRAYER POINTS: Holy Spirit, help me devote much time to Your Word, studying, hearing, meditating on, and obeying Your Word. Also, help me to pray prayers that You will answer. I shall make my requests according to the Word of God and receive answers in Jesus’ name.
