“For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s” (1 Corinthians 6:20 New King James Version).

A human being is made up of three parts: the spirit, soul, and body. All three are important but some people sometimes neglect or abuse one or two of them and focus on the remaining one. We must understand the relationship among the three and not abuse or neglect any.

1 Thessalonians 5:23 says, “Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ” (New King James Version). This scripture mentions the three parts that man is made up of: the spirit, soul, and body.

The spirit communicates with the spiritual realm (God), the soul with the psychological, and the body with the physical. I want to focus on the body in this devotional. Genesis 2:7 says the LORD God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living being. You belong to God because He made you. Your body doesn’t belong to you; it belongs to God, your Maker.

You need your body to live as a human being on earth. Therefore, you must take good care of your physical body without idolizing it. The human body is very important. When someone is sick, for instance, he cannot function well.

James 2:26 says that as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also. Note the first part of this scripture. It underscores the fact that the body needs the spirit to be alive. But the spirit also needs the body to live in.

We need to relate properly to our bodies according to the Word of God because our bodies are important to God even though when we die our bodies will be buried and they will decompose. 2 Corinthians 4:16 says though our outward man is perishing, the inward man is being renewed day by day. Our outward man or our bodies are perishing daily, and when we die, they will be buried and will not go to heaven. At the resurrection, we shall be given an immortal body (1 Corinthians 15:53).

Acknowledge that your body belongs to God, and it is the temple of the Holy Spirit. Whoever buys something owns it. Every born-again person was bought at a price as 1 Corinthians 6:20a and 1 Corinthians 7:23a say. Paul acknowledged that he belonged to Christ. He said in Galatians 6:17b that he bore on His body the marks of Jesus or the scars that showed he belonged to Jesus.

Your body belongs to God, and it is the temple of the Holy Spirit. 1 Corinthians 6:19 says, “Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?” (New King James Version). The phrase “you are not your own” means you don’t belong to yourself. You belong to God. Your body belongs to Him. Therefore, you should not use it any way you like. “Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself” (1 Corinthians 6:19 New Living Translation).

If you acknowledge this, you will make sure that you keep the temple of the Holy Spirit holy. You will flee sexual immorality, for every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body (1 Corinthians 6:18). You will also flee other sins that defile your body.

Your body belongs to God. Therefore, as Romans 12:1 says, you should present your body as a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. Don’t yield your body to sin. Don’t let any part of your body be used for sin. Romans 6:12 says you should not allow sin to reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. Verse 13 says you should not let any part of your body become an instrument of evil to serve sin but instead, give yourselves completely to God, for you were dead, but now you have new life. It adds that you should use your whole body as an instrument to do what is right for the glory of God. “Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a harlot? Certainly not!” (1 Corinthians 6:15 New King James Version). The body is not meant for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body (verse 13b).

Magnify, exalt, or honour God in your body. In other words, glorify God in your body. Paul says in 1 Corinthians 6:20, “For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s” (New King James Version). Both your body and spirit belong to God, not to you or anyone else. Paul also says in Philippians 1:20, “I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death” (New International Version). Whether by life or death, let Christ be magnified or honoured in your body or life. Sin does not glorify God. Flee sin. Get rid of whatever will cause you to sin (Matthew 5:29-30).

Take good care of your body but don’t neglect your spirit and soul. Let not your body become your god. Jesus says you should not worry about the clothes you will wear because the body is more important than clothes. You should not worry like non-believers do, rather trust God for all your needs, including what to eat, drink, and wear. Unfortunately, this is all many people live for.  “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?” (Matthew 6:25 New King James Version). Note the reference to the body in this scripture. Luke 12:22-23 says a similar thing. Take care of your body but don’t live for clothes or fashion.

In 1 Corinthians 7:4, the Bible says the wife does not have authority over her body, but the husband does, and likewise, the husband does not have authority over his body, but the wife does. In other words, the husband’s body belongs to the wife and vice versa. But this is not in the same sense in which the bodies of both belong to God. Your body belongs to God to whom you will give account of yourself after your life on earth.

If you are not born again, you need to give your life to Jesus now. I urge you to take the following steps: *Admit that you are a sinner, and you cannot save yourself and repent of your sins. *Confess Jesus as your Lord and Saviour. *Renounce your past way of life – your relationship with the devil and his works. *Invite Jesus into your life. *As a mark of seriousness to mature in the faith, start attending a Bible-believing and Bible-teaching church. There they will teach you how to grow in the Kingdom of God.

Kindly say this prayer now: O Lord God, I come unto You today. I know I am a sinner, and I cannot save myself. I believe that Jesus is the Son of God who died on the cross to save me and God raised Him on the third day. I repent of my sins and confess Jesus as my Lord and Saviour. I surrender my life to Jesus now and invite Him into my heart. By this prayer, I know I am saved. Thank You, Jesus, for saving me and making me a child of God.

I believe you have said this prayer from your heart. Congratulations! You will need to join a Bible-believing and Bible-teaching church in your area where they will teach you how to live your new life in Christ Jesus. I pray that you flourish like a palm tree and grow like a cedar of Lebanon. May you grow into Christ in all things and become all God wants you to be. I will be glad to hear from you. The Lord be with you.

PRAYER POINTS: My body belongs to God; I will not abuse or neglect it. I will not let any part of my body become an instrument of evil to serve sin; I will my body as an instrument to do what is right for the glory of God. Holy Spirirt, help me to glorify God in my body and spirit which belong to God.
