TOPIC: YOU ARE MORE THAN A BODY!

BY T. O. BANSO

Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Thessalonians 5:23 New King James Version).

You are a spirit, you have a soul, and you live in a body. You’re a tripartite being. But some people believe that human nature is two-fold, not three-fold. They argue that there is no distinction in the Bible between the soul and spirit and that they are used interchangeably.

Paul says, Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Thessalonians 5:23 New King James Version). The Greek word translated as spirit in this verse is pneuma. Please note the order. Spirit comes before soul and body.

Unfortunately, many people pay more attention to their bodies than their spirits. And they pay more attention to their soul than their spirit. However, Paul mentioned the spirit before the soul and body. The spirit of man is more important than the soul or the body even though nobody can live on earth as a human being without the body. Your body is your “earth suit,” similar to the spacesuit worn by astronauts in space. “And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being” (Genesis 2:7 New King James Version). The Hebrew word translated as “breath” in this verse is neshamah, and it is translated as spirit in some verses in the Bible, including Proverbs 20:27.

The human spirit is very important. Proverbs 20:27 says, “The spirit of a man is the lamp of the LORD, Searching all the inner depths of his heart” (New King James Version). The New Living Translation says it like this: The LORD’s light penetrates the human spirit, exposing every hidden motive.”

Your real you is your spirit, not your body or soul. Don’t neglect your spirit. John 4:24 says God is Spirit and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth. We worship God through our spirit. If you’re born again, God communicates with your recreated human spirit through the Holy Spirit who dwells in your spirit. “The ‘spirit’ links man with the higher intelligences of heaven, and is that highest part of man which is receptive of the quickening Holy Spirit” (Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Commentary). You contact God and receive from Him through your spirit. Romans 8:16 says the Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God. Jesus lives in your spirit.

John 3:6 says flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. When you are born again, it is your spirit that is born again, not your soul or body. The unbeliever is spiritually dead. After you are born again, your soul, which comprises your mind, will, and emotions, continues to be renewed as you expose yourself to the Word of God. Through that, your life is transformed. “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God” (Romans 12:2 New King James Version).

However, the body will be transformed at the resurrection of the dead. 1 Corinthians 15:53-54 says, “For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: ‘Death is swallowed up in victory’” (New King James Version). But, before then, you must not yield any part of your body to the devil for sin. “Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness” (Romans 6:13 New International Version). You’re more than a beautiful or handsome face, a sexy body, bones, muscles, nerves, arteries, veins, and other organs of your body.

Is your spirit born again? What does it profit a man/woman if he/she has a handsome/beautiful face and a sexy body, puts on designer clothes, and acquires multiple degrees, educating his soul (mind), but ends in hellfire? Pay attention to your spirit first, but don’t neglect your soul and body.

Don’t focus excessively on your body.  Also, don’t let anyone reduce you to just a body. You’re more than a body. A lack of appreciation of this truth is the reason society has turned women into sex objects, and use them as such in adverts! Some women also promote this error, showing off and selling their bodies! This is condemnable.

All about women is not sex! Woman, you’re a spirit, you have a soul, and you live in a body. There is more about you than the body you’re exhibiting. Don’t use your body to manipulate the opposite sex. The body is not for sexual immorality, but for the Lord; and the Lord for the body. You say, ‘Food for the stomach and the stomach for food, and God will destroy them both.’ The body, however, is not meant for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body” (1 Corinthians 6:13 New International Version).

Whether you’re a man or woman, if you’re born again, your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit; you were bought with a price. Therefore, you must glorify God in your body. Paul puts it this way in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20: “Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s” (New King James Version). If you’re not born again, give your life to Jesus today and begin to expose your mind to the Word of God for its renewal. This will lead to your transformation.

You are more than a body. The spirit of man is eternal. As Jesus died on the cross, He called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit” (Luke 23:46 New International Version). But God raised Him from the dead on the third day. Similarly, there will be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and the unjust (Acts 24:15). “Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come forth — those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation” (John 5:28-29 New King James Version). You are more than a body.

TAKE ACTION!

If you are not born again, you need to give your life to Jesus now. I urge you to take the following steps: *Admit that you are a sinner and you cannot save yourself and repent of your sins. *Confess Jesus as your Lord and Saviour. *Renounce your past way of life – your relationship with the devil and his works. *Invite Jesus into your life. *As a mark of seriousness to mature in the faith, start attending a Bible-believing and Bible-teaching church. There they will teach you how to grow in the Kingdom of God.

Kindly say this prayer now: O Lord God, I come unto You today. I know I am a sinner and I cannot save myself. I believe that Jesus is the Son of God who died on the cross to save me and God raised Him on the third day. I repent of my sins and confess Jesus as my Lord and Saviour. I surrender my life to Jesus now and invite Him into my heart. By this prayer, I know I am saved. Thank You, Jesus, for saving me and making me a child of God.

I believe you have said this prayer from your heart. Congratulations! You will need to join a Bible-believing and Bible-teaching church in your area where they will teach you how to live your new life in Christ Jesus. I pray that you flourish like a palm tree and grow like a cedar of Lebanon. May you grow into Christ in all things and become all God wants you to be. I will be glad to hear from you. The Lord be with you.

PRAYER POINTS: Father, sanctify you completely and keep my spirit, soul, and body blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. I will not focus excessively on my body. I will pay more attention to my spirit. Holy Spirit, help me to glorify God in my body.
