TOPIC: WALKING IN THE LIGHT OF GOD’S WORD
BY T.O. BANSO
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Psalm 119:105 New King James Version).
Every sinner is walking in darkness and needs to come into the light. Unfortunately, sinners cannot come out by themselves. But the good news is that Jesus came to bring them out. When sinners are saved, they are transferred from darkness into the light. Ephesians 5:8 says that believers in Christ were once darkness, but are now light in the Lord and should walk as children of light.
According to Colossians 1:13-14, “He [Jesus] has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins” (New King Jams Version).
The word of God is light. As the writer of Psalm 119 says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (verse 105 New King James Version). According to Verse 130, the entrance of His words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple. The word of God is light. It illuminates our paths. It instructs us and shows us the will of God so that we don’t go into error. If you follow it, you’ll never walk in darkness. “For the commandment is a lamp, and the law a light; reproofs of instruction are the way of life” (Proverbs 6:23 New King James Version).
Jesus said his followers are the light of the world; a city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden (Matthew 5:14). But His followers can never be the light to the world if they are walking in darkness. Therefore, Jesus said, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven” (verse 16 New King James Version).
Jesus’ followers will become the light to the world as they walk in the light of God’s word. You can’t give what you don’t have. “The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light” (Matthew 6:22 News King James Version). As a follower of Christ, you must walk in the light of God’s word. “O house of Jacob, come and let us walk in the light of the LORD” (Isaiah 2:5 News King James Version).
God shows His light via His written word and through divine communication by the Holy Spirit, and the Holy Spirit never contradicts the written word. God’s Word gives direction – you don’t know the way. There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death (Proverbs 14:12; 16:25). God’s Word reveals God’s mind and will. The light of God removes ignorance as it supplies understanding.
Therefore, to walk in the light of God’s word is to obey the word of God, do His will, be obedient to His instructions, and not be dominated by the flesh (sin). “If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin” (1 John 1:6-7 News King James Version).
Whoever is walking in the Word of God will also walk in love. The Bible says, he who says he is in the light and continues to hate his brother is in darkness (1 John 2:9). Love is the greatest! (1 Corinthians 13:13). God is love (1 John 4:8) and God is also light (1 John 1:5). Walking in the light of God’s word is, therefore, walking in God! Also, if you’re walking in God’s kind of love, you’re walking in God’s light.
Ephesians 5:14 says, “Awake, you who sleep, arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light” (New King James Version). Yes, Christ shall give the spiritually dead (sinners) light and He has already given light to every sinner that has come to Him (Luke 1:79). Isaiah 9:2 says, “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, upon them a light has shined” (New King James Version).
It is the responsibility of every saved sinner to walk in the light that he has been given by, primarily, obeying the Word of God. Don’t love darkness more than light. “And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil” (John 3:19 New King James Version). Jesus came to deliver us from the power of darkness and bring us into the light.
He said, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life (John 8:12 New King James Version).  If you’re walking in the light of God’s word, you’re walking in Jesus. The Word of God is truth (John 17:17b). Jesus says He and His Father are one (John 10:30). If you’re walking in the teachings of Jesus – obeying His word, adjusting your life to conform with the teaching of Jesus, aligning your conduct with the teaching of Jesus – you’re walking in the light. You must daily commit yourself to living a righteous life.
1 Thessalonians 4:1-2 says, “Finally then, brethren, we urge and exhort in the Lord Jesus that you should abound more and more, just as you received from us how you ought to walk and to please God; for you know what commandments we gave you through the Lord Jesus” (New King James Version). Walk in the Word of God.
God has sent His word to you to guide you through life so that you’ll not walk in darkness. David said, “For with You is the fountain of life; in Your light we see light” (Psalm 36:9 New King James Version). You should study, listen to, meditate on, and constantly obey His word. Â
TAKE ACTION!
If you are not born again, you need to give your life to Jesus now. I urge you to take the following steps: *Admit that you are a sinner and you cannot save yourself and repent of your sins. *Confess Jesus as your Lord and Saviour. *Renounce your past way of life – your relationship with the devil and his works. *Invite Jesus into your life. *As a mark of seriousness to mature in the faith, start attending a Bible-believing and Bible-teaching church. There they will teach you how to grow in the Kingdom of God.
Kindly say this prayer now: O Lord God, I come unto You today. I know I am a sinner and I cannot save myself. I believe that Jesus is the Son of God who died on the cross to save me and God raised Him on the third day. I repent of my sins and confess Jesus as my Lord and Saviour. I surrender my life to Jesus now and invite Him into my heart. By this prayer, I know I am saved. Thank You, Jesus, for saving me and making me a child of God.
I believe you have said this prayer from your heart. Congratulations! You will need to join a Bible-believing and Bible-teaching church in your area where they will teach you how to live your new life in Christ Jesus. I pray that you flourish like a palm tree and grow like a cedar of Lebanon. May you grow into Christ in all things and become all God wants you to be. I will be glad to hear from you. The Lord be with you.
PRAYER POINTS: Father, thank You for delivering me from the power of darkness and conveying me into the kingdom of the Son of Your love. The power of darkness shall never have control over me again in Jesus’ name. Lead me, Holy Spirit, to walk always in the light of God’s Word. I pray that all believers will manifest as the light of the world and through the preaching of the Gospel bring sinners into the light.
