“Keep on doing the things that you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you” (Philippians 4:9 New Revised Standard Version).

Someone becomes a Christian when he gives his life to Jesus. This is the same as being born again. According to the Lord Jesus Christ, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again (John 3:3). Jesus told Nicodemus, a Pharisee, this when he came to Him at night. He also said,You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again’” (John 3:7 New International Version).

The Apostle Paul said that with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation (Romans 10:10). Once one believes in his heart and confesses Jesus as his Lord and Saviour, he is saved. However, the Bible says he must keep on doing certain things. I want to highlight twenty things a Christian must keep on doing.

1. Keep on loving God. The Bible says you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and strength (Deuteronomy 6:5). It says a similar thing in many scriptures in the Old and New Testaments. Jesus referred to this in Matthew 22:37 and Mark 12:30. Paul said in 1 Corinthians 16:22, If anyone does not love the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be accursed. O Lord, come!” (New King James Version).

A Christian must keep on loving God. Joshua 23:11 says, “So be very careful to keep on loving him” (Living Bible). Note the phrase “keep on loving him.”

2. Keep on obeying God. This is related to the first thing I discussed. There is a relationship between loving God and obeying Him. In Exodus 20:20, Moses told the Israelites, Don’t be afraid; God has only come to test you and make you keep on obeying him, so that you will not sin” (Good News Translation). Note the phrase “Keep on obeying him.” God wanted to make the Israelites keep on obeying Him.

A Christian must keep on obeying God. If a Christian does not continue to obey God, he cannot live a holy life, which God demands from him. Be holy, because I am holy” (1 Peter 1:16a New International Version). Without holiness, no one shall see the Lord (Hebrews 12:14b). The writer of Psalm 119 says, I will keep on obeying your instructions forever and ever” (verse 44 New Living Translation). You should do this if you have given your life to Jesus.

3. Keep on following Jesus. A Christian is saved by believing in Jesus and accepting Him into his life. After salvation, he must keep on following Him, no matter what. Colossians 2:6 says, You have accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord. Now keep on following him” (Contemporary English Version). To follow Jesus, one must practise His teachings. Jesus told the Jews who believed Him, If you keep on obeying what I have said, you truly are my disciples” (John 8:31 Contemporary English Version). Are you truly His disciple?

4. Keep on reading, studying, and meditating on the Word of God, and obeying it. Joshua 1:8 says,This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success” (New King James Version).

Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God (Matthew 4:4). Luke 4:4 says a similar thing. A Christian must keep reading, studying, and meditating on the Word of God and obeying it. Paul says in 1 Timothy 4:13a, “Until I arrive, be sure to keep on reading the Scriptures in worship” (Contemporary English Version).

5. Keep on having faith in God or trusting God. Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God (Romans 10:17). A Christian must continue to have faith in God or trust Him. Without faith it is impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6a). The just shall live by faith (Romans 1:17b; Galatians 3:11b; Hebrews 10:38a).

A Christian must keep having faith in God no matter life’s circumstances. Paul says to the Thessalonian Christians, This is why we brag about you to all of God’s churches. We tell them how patient you are and how you keep on having faith, even though you are going through a lot of trouble and suffering” (2 Thessalonians 1:4 Contemporary English Version). Note the phrase “Keep on having faith.”

Whatever a Christian faces, he must keep on having faith; he must not faint. Proverbs 24:10 says if you faint in the day of adversity, your strength is small. The writer of the book of Hebrews says, But Christ is the Son in charge of God’s people. And we are those people, if we keep on being brave and don’t lose hope (Hebrews 3:6 Contemporary English Version).

Even when a Christian is afraid, he must keep having faith in God or trusting Him. David said, Have pity, God Most High! My enemies chase me all day. Many of them are pursuing and attacking me, but even when I am afraid, I keep on trusting you” (Psalm 56:1-3 Contemporary English Version). A Christian must keep trusting God even in adversity. He must never quit on God. He must “keep on trusting in his kindness” as part of Romans 11:22 says in the Contemporary English Version.

6. Keep on believing and doing what you have been taught. The Apostle John said, So keep on believing what you have been taught from the beginning. If you do, you will always be in close fellowship with both God the Father and his Son” (1 John 2:24 Living Bible). Note the phrase “Keep on believing.” Also, the Apostle John said,But you must keep on believing the things you have been taught. You know they are true, for you know that you can trust those of us who have taught you” (2 Timothy 3:14 Living Bible). A Christian must keep on believing and obeying what he has been taught.

Paul also wrote to Timothy, “Keep on doing the things that you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you” (Philippians 4:9 New Revised Standard Version).

7. Keep on loving others. A Christian must not only keep loving God, but must also keep loving fellow human beings. As Jesus said, the first commandment is to love God and the second is to love one’s neighbour. He said all the Law and the Prophets were based on these two commandments – no law is greater than these two (Matthew 22:37-40; Mark 12:29-31). Hebrews 13:1 says, “Keep on loving each other as brothers” (New International Version).

The Bible says if someone says he loves God and hates his brother, he is a liar, for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen; how can he love God whom he has not seen?  (1 John 4:20). We show that we love God when we love others. God is love. “He who does not love does not know God, for God is love” (1 John 4:8 New King James Version). A Christian must keep loving fellow human beings. Whoever loves others has done all that the Law demands (Romans 13:8b).

If you are a Christian, ensure that you keep doing what I have discussed today. I will continue tomorrow. Keep doing what God expects you to do.

If you are not born again, you need to give your life to Jesus now. I urge you to take the following steps: *Admit that you are a sinner and cannot save yourself and repent of your sins. *Confess Jesus as your Lord and Saviour. *Renounce your past way of life – your relationship with the devil and his works. *Invite Jesus into your life. *As a mark of seriousness to mature in the faith, start attending a Bible-believing and Bible-teaching church. There they will teach you how to grow in the Kingdom of God.

Kindly say this prayer now: O Lord God, I come unto You today. I know I am a sinner and I cannot save myself.  I believe that Jesus is the Son of God who died on the cross to save me and God raised Him on the third day. I repent of my sins and confess Jesus as my Lord and Saviour. I surrender my life to Jesus now and invite Him into my heart. By this prayer, I know I am saved. Thank You, Jesus, for saving me and making me a child of God.

I believe you have said this prayer from your heart. Congratulations! You must join a Bible-believing and Bible-teaching church in your area where they will teach you how to live your new life in Christ Jesus. I pray that you flourish like a palm tree and grow like a cedar of Lebanon. May you grow into Christ in all things and become all God wants you to be. I will be glad to hear from you. The Lord be with you.

PRAYER POINTS: Holy Spirit, help me to keep doing everything God wants me to do. Love is the greatest commandment. I shall keep loving God and my fellow human beings in Jesus’ name.
