TOPIC: THE GOD OF WONDERS!
BY T. O. BANSO
“You are the God who does wonders; You have declared Your strength among the peoples” (Psalm 77:14 New King James Version).
One of the descriptions of God in the Bible is that He is the God of wonders. He did wonders in the past and He still does wonders today because He is the LORD and He does not change, as He said in Malachi 3:6. Throughout the Bible, we read about the wonders of God right from Genesis 1 where we see the wonders of creation.
David said that he was fearfully and wonderfully made. He also said that the works of God were marvelous and his soul knew that very well (Psalm 139:14). In addition to being fearfully and wonderfully made, human beings, at different times, have enjoyed God’s miraculous interventions in their lives. Some of these are recorded in the Bible. Several others who lived after the Bible was written have also experienced the wonders of God. Moreover, many people living today have testimonies to share about the wonders of God in their lives.
Psalm 77:14 says, “You are the God of miracles and wonders! You still demonstrate your awesome power” (The Living Bible). God’s miracles and wonders have not ceased. They are ongoing among humans, especially His children today. It is erroneous for anyone to say that the age of miracles has passed. The Hebrew word translated wonders is pele. Brown-Driver- Briggs Hebrew Lexicon gives one of the meanings as “wonder (extraordinary, hard to understand thing).” Â
The author of that psalm earlier said in verse 11 that he would remember the works of the LORD and surely he would remember His wonders of old. He said he would also meditate on all His work and talk of His deeds (verse 12). The King James Version renders verse 14 thus: “You are the God who does wonders; You have declared Your strength among the peoples” (New King James Version).
Psalm 77 refers to one of the wonders of God: the parting of the Red Sea for the Israelites after they had left Egypt (Exodus 14-21-31). This is no doubt a great wonder, which only God could have done. “The waters saw You, O God; the waters saw You, they were afraid; The depths also trembled. The clouds poured out water; The skies sent out a sound; Your arrows also flashed about. The voice of Your thunder was in the whirlwind; The lightnings lit up the world; The earth trembled and shook. Your way was in the sea, Your path in the great waters, And Your footsteps were not known.  You led Your people like a flock By the hand of Moses and Aaron” (Psalm 77:16-20 New King James Version).
Other passages in the Bible refer to this great wonder (Joshua 24:6-7; Nehemiah 9:9-11; Psalms 74:13; 106:9-11; 136:13-15; Isaiah 51:10). God is the God of wonders. In the song that Moses and the children of Israel sang after they had walked through the Red Sea on dry ground, they said, “Who is like You, O LORD, among the gods? Who is like You, glorious in holiness, Fearful in praises, doing wonders” (Exodus 15:11 New King James Version). Did you see that?
God does wonders! He did it in the past and He still does it today. He made the Israelites walk on dry land in the sea. The waters were a wall to them on their right hand and their left. But the Egyptians, who pursued them, perished in the Red Sea, as the waters came back upon the Egyptians, their chariots, and their horsemen. God will perform His wonders and defeat all forces that are after you.
The God of wonders! There is no God like Him, as the Bible says in Deuteronomy 33:26; 2 Samuel 7:22;1 Kings 8:23; Jeremiah 10:6-7; and Isaiah 40:18. There is no god in heaven or on earth who can do anything like the works and mighty deeds of God (Deuteronomy 3:24).
The God of wonders! Psalm 72:18 says, “Blessed be the LORD God, the God of Israel, Who only does wondrous things!” (New King James Version). Only the living and true God does wondrous things. If you know Him as the God of wonders, you should expect Him to do wondrous things for you, especially when you are in difficult situations and you need His intervention. He is a way maker.
David said in Psalm 86:7 that in the day of his trouble, He would call upon the LORD for He would answer him. According to him, among the gods, there is none like the LORD and there are no works like His works (verse 8). “All nations whom You have made Shall come and worship before You, O Lord, And shall glorify Your name. For You are great, and do wondrous things; You alone are God” (verses 9-10 New King James Version).
God is the God of wonders! He does wondrous things. When King Darius of Babylon saw how God delivered Daniel in Lion’s den, he couldn’t but declare that He was the God of wonders. Daniel came out unhurt. Darius said, among other things, “He delivers and rescues, and He works signs and wonders In heaven and on earth, Who has delivered Daniel from the power of the lions” (Daniel 6:27 New King James Version). Who else could have done that if not the God of wonders? Highlighting the reasons to give thanks to the LORD, the writer of Psalm 136 says in verse 4, “To Him who alone does great wonders, for His mercy endures forever” (New King James Version). Great wonders!
Can you remember the wonders or great wonders of God in your life? How often do you thank Him for them, including thanking Him for fearfully and wonderfully making you? Suppose God didn’t intervene and do the wonders He did in your life in the past when you were in trouble. Where do you think you will be?
For the wonders of the past, present, and future, praise God. Give thanks to Him; don’t become too familiar with His wonders even if they happened long ago; still, thank Him. “And the heavens will praise Your wonders, O LORD; Your faithfulness also in the assembly of the saints” (Psalm 89:5 New King James Version). The earth must do as the heavens to praise His wonders.
Maybe you are in one trouble or the other at the moment; you could be going through adversity or you are facing a serious challenge. Look unto the God of wonders. Nothing is impossible or too difficult for Him to do. The Prophet Jeremiah said, “Ah, Lord GOD! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. There is nothing too hard for You” (Jeremiah 32:17 New King James Version).
Have faith in the God of wonders. David said in Psalm 34:19 that many were the afflictions of the righteous but the LORD delivered him out of them all. Put your trust in Him. He will deliver you. Call upon Him; He will answer you. Whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. Expect the God of wonders to do for you wonders – extraordinary, hard-to-understand things – and you will become a wonder to many (Psalm 71:7).
TAKE ACTION!
If you are not born again, you need to give your life to Jesus now. I urge you to take the following steps: *Admit that you are a sinner and you cannot save yourself and repent of your sins. *Confess Jesus as your Lord and Saviour. *Renounce your past way of life – your relationship with the devil and his works. *Invite Jesus into your life. *As a mark of seriousness to mature in the faith, start attending a Bible-believing and Bible-teaching church. There they will teach you how to grow in the Kingdom of God.
Kindly say this prayer now: O Lord God, I come unto You today. I know I am a sinner and I cannot save myself. I believe that Jesus is the Son of God who died on the cross to save me and God raised Him on the third day. I repent of my sins and confess Jesus as my Lord and Saviour. I surrender my life to Jesus now and invite Him into my heart. By this prayer, I know I am saved. Thank You, Jesus, for saving me and making me a child of God.
I believe you have said this prayer from your heart. Congratulations! You will need to join a Bible-believing and Bible-teaching church in your area where they will teach you how to live your new life in Christ Jesus. I pray that you flourish like a palm tree and grow like a cedar of Lebanon. May you grow into Christ in all things and become all God wants you to be. I will be glad to hear from you. The Lord be with you.
PRAYER POINTS: Father, thank You for the wonders You have done in my life and among Your people. As I continue to walk with You, Father, make me a wonder to many. You are the Lord and You do not change. Therefore, for everyone looking unto you and crying to you in their present trouble or trial, do wonders in their lives that they may praise Your name forever.
