PROTECT YOUR EYES

WISDOM FOR LIVING DAILY DEVOTIONAL

TOPIC: PROTECT YOUR EYES

BY T. O. BANSO.

“But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart” (Matthew 5:28 New King James Version).

Proverbs 20:12 says, The hearing ear and the seeing eye, the Lord has made them both” (English Standard Version). The New Living Translation says, Ears to hear and eyes to see— both are gifts from the LORD.” God made the ears and the eyes just like He made the other parts of the human body. Both of them are gates to the human heart, which we must protect to guard our hearts. Proverbs 4:23 says, Above all else, guard your heart,  for everything you do flows from it. Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it” (New International Version). We must mount guard continually over our hearts to prevent sin from coming out of our hearts.

Unedifying information or images coming into our hearts through our ears and eyes, for instance, can cause sin to come out of our hearts. Jesus said, For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. These are what defile a person; but eating with unwashed hands does not defile them” (Matthew 15:19-20 New International Version).

God created every part of our bodies, but we must not use them to sin. Romans 6:13 says,Do not let any part of your body become an instrument of evil to serve sin. Instead, give yourselves completely to God, for you were dead, but now you have new life. So use your whole body as an instrument to do what is right for the glory of God” (New Living Translation).

I would like to focus on the eyes. God made your eyes for you to see. But you can use it for righteousness or sin. You can use your eyes to look at things that will send unedifying information and images to your heart that will lead you to sin. Therefore, you must not focus your eyes on everything. You must protect your eyes from some things. You must be selective about what you expose your eyes to to protect your eyes.

Be careful about what you watch whether it is in a book or magazine, or on television. You cannot watch just any film, movie, or programme. You must be selective and guided. What are you doing with pornography? How does visiting pornographic sites help your spiritual growth as a Christian? Whatever you expose your eyes to must pass the test of the Word of God. It must not create in you a sinful desire. James 1:14-15 says, But each one is tempted when he is dragged away, enticed and baited [to commit sin] by his own [worldly] desire (lust, passion). Then when the illicit desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin has run its course, it gives birth to death” (Amplified Bible).

Protect your eyes so that you will not be led to sin. Jesus said in Matthew 5:28, “But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart” (New King James Version). This tells us that one can commit adultery by looking lustfully at a woman – mental adultery. The Easy-to-Read Version renders Matthew 5:28 thus:But I tell you that if a man looks at a woman and wants to sin sexually with her, he has already committed that sin with her in his mind.”

Some women dress seductively today. They do so deliberately. Some men do that too. You may not be able to stop them from dressing the way they do, but you can protect your eyes by refraining from looking at them. You may not be able to avoid running into them but turn your eyes away from them. Don’t keep gazing at them thereby sending the wrong information to your heart. It will create an illicit desire in you that will conceive and give birth to sin, which, when it’s full-grown, will give birth to death.

Protect your eyes. Emulate Job, who said, I made a covenant with my eyes not to look lustfully at a young woman” (Job 31:1 New International Version). If you are a woman, make a covenant with your eyes too not to look lustfully at a young man. Protect your eyes. Some people wonder why they easily fall into temptation. It may be because they do not protect their eyes.

Colossians 3:2-4 says, Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.  When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory” (New International Version). If you set your mind on things above and not on earthly things, you will not allow your eyes to look at things that can lead you to sin.

1 John 2:15-16 says,Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world” (New International Version). Note the phrase “the lust of the eyes.”

You must protect your eyes against the lust of the eyes, which the New Living Translation refers to as a craving for everything we see.” The English Standard Version calls it “the desires of the eyes” while the Amplified Bible refers to it as “the lust and longing of the eyes.” The Contemporary English Version renders it as “our desire to have everything we see.” Protect your eyes. It is not everything that you must look at. If your eyes stumble on something sinful, don’t continue to look at it. Turn your eyes away from it.

Eve sinned because she satisfied the lust of the eyes. Genesis 3:6 says So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate” (English Standard Version). She did not keep her eyes away from the fruit God had forbidden them to eat.

How many times have you fallen into Satan’s temptation just because you failed to protect your eyes? Keep your eyes away from sin; keep sin away from your eyes!

David’s sin with Bathsheba started with seeing her nakedness (2 Samuel 11:2-3). Don’t let your eyes cause you to sin. Matthew 18:9 says, “And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you. It is better for you to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into hell fire” (New King James Version). That, of course, does not mean plucking out one’s eyes!

This is how the Amplified Bible puts Matthew 18:9: If your eye causes you to stumble and sin, pluck it out and throw it away from you [that is, remove yourself from the source of temptation]; it is better for you to enter life with only one eye, than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fiery hell.” Remove yourself from whatever will cause you to sin. Remove your eyes from continuing to look at what will cause you to fall into temptation.

Protect your eyes. Don’t let it pollute your life. David said in Psalm 101:3a, “I will set no worthless or wicked thing before my eyes” (Amplified Bible). Don’t set anything sinful before your eyes; don’t set your eyes on anything sinful. The writer of Psalm 119 prayed, “Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things; and give me life in your ways” (verse 37 English Standard Version).

Protect your eyes to protect your heart. Make your eyes an instrument of righteousness, not an instrument of evil to serve sin.

TAKE ACTION!

If you are not born again, you need to give your life to Jesus now. I urge you to take the following steps: *Admit that you are a sinner and cannot save yourself and repent of your sins. *Confess Jesus as your Lord and Saviour. *Renounce your past way of life – your relationship with the devil and his works. *Invite Jesus into your life. *As a mark of seriousness to mature in the faith, start attending a Bible-believing and Bible-teaching church. There they will teach you how to grow in the Kingdom of God.

Kindly say this prayer now: O Lord God, I come unto You today. I know I am a sinner, and I cannot save myself.  I believe that Jesus is the Son of God who died on the cross to save me and God raised Him on the third day. I repent of my sins and confess Jesus as my Lord and Saviour. I surrender my life to Jesus now and invite Him into my heart. By this prayer, I know I am saved. Thank You, Jesus, for saving me and making me a child of God.

I believe you have said this prayer from your heart. Congratulations! You will need to join a Bible-believing and Bible-teaching church in your area where they will teach you how to live your new life in Christ Jesus. I pray that you flourish like a palm tree and grow like a cedar of Lebanon. May you grow into Christ in all things and become all God wants you to be. I will be glad to hear from you. The Lord be with you.

PRAYER POINTS: Holy Spirit, help me to protect my eyes from anything sinful. I shall not yield my eyes as an instrument of sin but of righteousness in Jesus’ name.
