TOPIC: PROMOTION COMES FROM THE LORD
BY T. O. BANSO
“The Lord was with Joseph, and he was a successful man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian. And his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord made all he did to prosper in his hand. So Joseph found favor in his sight, and served him. Then he made him overseer of his house, and all that he had he put under his authority” (Genesis 39:2-4 New King James Version).
One of the powerful truths in the Bible is that promotion comes from the Lord. Psalm 75:6-7 says, “For promotion and power come from nowhere on earth, but only from God. He promotes one and deposes another” (The Living Bible). Promotion does not come from any man or god; it comes from the Living God. 1 Peter 5:6 says you should humble yourself under the mighty hand of God so that He may exalt you in due time. The word “exalt” also means “lift up.” James 4:10 says you should humble yourself in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you. From these scriptures, it is obvious that promotion comes from God but He often uses human beings.
If the Lord is with you, you don’t have to struggle for promotion or become envious of anyone’s promotion because the Lord will promote you in His time and way, and He will take the glory.
In Genesis 39, although Joseph was a slave in the house of Potiphar, the presence of the Lord with him led to his promotion. Joseph began to call the shots because Potiphar put him in charge of his entire household and entrusted him with all his business dealings.
Genesis 39:2-4 says, “The Lord was with Joseph, and he was a successful man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian. And his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord made all he did to prosper in his hand. So Joseph found favor in his sight, and served him. Then he made him overseer of his house, and all that he had he put under his authority” (Genesis 39:2-4 New King James Version).
In other words, Joseph was a successful servant in the house of his master! Note the phrase “And his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord made all he did to prosper in his hand.” Because Potiphar noticed the presence of the Lord with Joseph and that He gave him success in everything he did, Joseph found favour in his eyes and became the overseer of his house. Potiphar entrusted to his care everything he owned. Potiphar was not concerned about anything except the food he ate. That’s serious!
Potiphar elevated Joseph, a slave, to this important position in his house because the LORD was with Joseph, and he found favour in Potiphar’s eye. Favour made him appoint Joseph the overseer of his house. Probably only those who knew when Joseph was bought as a slave could know that he was a slave! Joseph, himself, spoke about the extent of his power in Potiphar’s house when he told Potiphar’s seductive wife: “Look, my master does not know what is with me in the house, and he has committed all that he has to my hand. There is no one greater in this house than I, nor has he kept back anything from me but you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?” (Genesis 39:8-9 New King James Version). If Joseph had exaggerated his power, Potiphar’s wife would have disproved him!
Also, because the Lord was with Joseph in prison, he enjoyed another promotion, when the jailor put him in charge of all other prisoners. He entrusted everything into his hands and didn’t bother to check what Joseph was doing. “But the Lord was with Joseph and showed him mercy, and He gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison. And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph’s hand all the prisoners who were in the prison; whatever they did there, it was his doing. The keeper of the prison did not look into anything that was under Joseph’s authority, because the Lord was with him; and whatever he did, the Lord made it prosper” (Genesis 39:21-23 New King James Version). Note Joseph’s promotion in this scripture. Although he was a prisoner, he wasn’t given a prisoner’s treatment. He was lifted above his colleagues, and they were under his care. Joseph was promoted in prison because the Lord was with him He showed him mercy, and He gave him favour in the sight of the keeper of the prison.
Promotion comes from the Lord. Later, during the famine in Egypt, Pharaoh appointed Joseph as his second-in-command. Pharaoh recognized that the Spirit of God was in Joseph, and he had the solution to the impending food crisis (Genesis 41:38). Verses 41-43 say, “And Pharaoh said to Joseph, ‘See, I have set you over all the land of Egypt.’ Then Pharaoh took his signet ring off his hand and put it on Joseph’s hand; and he clothed him in garments of fine linen and put a gold chain around his neck. And he had him ride in the second chariot which he had; and they cried out before him, ‘Bow the knee!’ So he set him over all the land of Egypt” (New King James Version).
The Lord promoted Joseph to have a global influence! People came to him from all countries to buy food because of the famine. “So when all the land of Egypt was famished, the people cried to Pharaoh for bread. Then Pharaoh said to all the Egyptians, ‘Go to Joseph; whatever he says to you, do.’ The famine was over all the face of the earth, and Joseph opened all the storehouses and sold to the Egyptians. And the famine became severe in the land of Egypt. So all countries came to Joseph in Egypt to buy grain, because the famine was severe in all lands” (Genesis 41:55-57 New King James Version). Did you see that?
Pharaoh surrendered his authority to a foreigner to implement and supervise the food storage programme and sale he had advised him. As Genesis 42:6 says, Joseph was governor of all Egypt and was in charge of the sale of the grain. Promotion comes from the Lord. The Lord promoted Joseph. He told his brothers that they did not send him to Egypt but the Lord did, and made him a father to Pharaoh, and Lord of all his house, and a ruler throughout all the land of Egypt.
Don’t seek promotion from man but the Lord. True promotion comes from the Lord. But you must have a living relationship with Him. You must be born again. You must yield the control of your life to Him. Develop intimacy with the Lord by studying and meditating on His Word daily, obeying His Word, worshipping Him, trusting in Him, praying, and sharing your faith with others. In addition, humble yourself under the mighty hand of God so that He may exalt you in due time. If the Lord is with you, as He was with Joseph, you will experience divine promotion. It doesn’t matter your present status, He will lift you. Hannah said of the Lord in 1 Samuel 2:8, “He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap; he seats them with princes and has them inherit a throne of honor” (New International Version).
The Lord will promote you this season. 2 Samuel 23:1 describes David as a man raised so high or exalted by the Most High God. The Lord preferred him as king above his seven brothers (1 Samuel 16:1-13). The Lord also promoted Esther as queen. He made King Ahasuerus choose her and crown her as queen in place of Vashti (Esther 2:15-18). He also made King Ahasuerus open the book of the records of the chronicles and honour Mordecai for his unrewarded good deed in the past, and, in the process, humiliated his enemy, Haman (Esther 6:1-12). The Lord also promoted Mordecai in place of Haman (Esther 8:2). The Lord will raise you, too. He will promote you even above your enemies. They shall submit to you (Deuteronomy 33:29; Psalm 66:3b).
If you are not born again, you need to give your life to Jesus now. I urge you to take the following steps: *Admit that you are a sinner and you cannot save yourself and repent of your sins. *Confess Jesus as your Lord and Saviour. *Renounce your past way of life – your relationship with the devil and his works. *Invite Jesus into your life. *As a mark of seriousness to mature in the faith, start attending a Bible-believing and Bible-teaching church. There they will teach you how to grow in the Kingdom of God.
Kindly say this prayer now: O Lord God, I come unto You today. I know I am a sinner and I cannot save myself. I believe that Jesus is the Son of God who died on the cross to save me and God raised Him on the third day. I repent of my sins and confess Jesus as my Lord and Saviour. I surrender my life to Jesus now and invite Him into my heart. By this prayer, I know I am saved. Thank You, Jesus, for saving me and making me a child of God.
I believe you have said this prayer from your heart. Congratulations! You will need to join a Bible-believing and Bible-teaching church in your area where they will teach you how to live your new life in Christ Jesus. I pray that you flourish like a palm tree and grow like a cedar of Lebanon. May you grow into Christ in all things and become all God wants you to be. I will be glad to hear from you. The Lord be with you.
PRAYER POINTS: Holy Spirit, help me to develop intimacy with the Lord. Also, help me to humble myself under the mighty hand of the Lord so that He may lift me in due season. Father, promotion comes from You; promote me.
