TOPIC: LIVING BY THE WORD OF GOD

BY T. O. BANSO

“Jesus answered, ‘It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God’” (Matthew 4:4 New International Version).

In 2 Samuel 6:1-19, David wanted to bring back the ark of God from the house of Abinadab to Jerusalem after it had stayed there for twenty years. His first attempt ended in a disaster as Uzzah, one of Abinadab’s sons, was killed because he touched the ark to stabilize it when the cart stumbled. He was wrong. He wasn’t supposed to touch the ark. Also, David was not supposed to have carried the ark on a new cart as the Philistines did based on the advice of their priests and diviners (1 Samuel 6:7-8).

The second time he went to carry the ark from the house of Obed-Edom where it was taken to after Uzzah’s unfortunate death, he obeyed God’s instructions. He had learnt from the tragedy the need to live by the Word of God. 1 Chronicles 15:14-15 says, So the priests and the Levites sanctified themselves to bring up the ark of the Lord God of Israel. And the children of the Levites bore the ark of God on their shoulders, by its poles, as Moses had commanded according to the word of the Lord” (New King James Version).

The children of the Levites carried the ark from the house of Obed-Edom and everything went perfectly well. The sons of Kohath or the Kohathites, one of the three main Levitical families, were charged with the duty of carrying holy things but were forbidden from touching them, lest they should die. They were to carry them, using the poles (Numbers 4:15). The Kohathites were the descendants of Kohath, one of the sons of Levi.

You must live by the Word of God. Don’t copy the methods of the sinners even if they are working for them. You are a child of God and must do things God’s way. “Jesus answered, ‘It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God’” (Matthew 4:4 New International Version). Luke 4:4 says a similar thing, which is a quotation from Deuteronomy 8:3. The latter part of Deuteronomy 8:3, in the Contemporary English Version, says, thus: “People need more than food to live–they need every word that the LORD has spoken.

Follow the Word of God concerning every department of your life – your marriage, your business, your relationships, etc. Be guided by the Word of God. “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Psalm 119:105 New King James Version).

Deuteronomy 10:12-13 says, And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways and to love Him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to keep the commandments of the Lord and His statutes which I command you today for your good?” (New King James Version). Obedience to God is non-negotiable.

God says,If you will only obey me, you will have plenty to eat” (Isaiah 1:19 New Living Translation). Verse 20 says, But if you turn away and refuse to listen, you will be devoured by the sword of your enemies. I, the Lord, have spoken!” (New Living Translation). The key word is obedience. You must make it your watchword.

Partial obedience is no obedience; it is still disobedience. It is wrong to choose which out of the Word of God you want to obey. Total obedience is what God demands. As Mary said to the servants at the wedding in Cana of Galilee, “Do whatever he tells you” (John 2:5 New Living Translation). They should do whatever Jesus told them to do. Don’t do what you see others do. Do what God says; do what His Word says. Your delight must be in the Word of God. Psalm 1:2 says the delight of the righteous shall be in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night. You should delight in obeying God. It is in your interest; it is for your good.

To disobey God is to act foolishly. The Prophet Samuel told Saul, You have done foolishly. You have not kept the commandment of the Lord your God, which He commanded you. For now the Lord would have established your kingdom over Israel forever. But now your kingdom shall not continue. The Lord has sought for Himself a man after His own heart, and the Lord has commanded him to be commander over His people, because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you” (1 Samuel 13:13-14 New King James Version). Live by the Word of God.

If you disobey God, you’re saying you have a better idea – you are wiser than God. But the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men (1 Corinthians 1:25). Obey the Word of God even when and if you don’t understand it. Trust God that He has all the details and knows what is best for you. There is a way that seems right to a man but the end is destruction (Proverbs 14:12; 16:25). Do what is right in God’s eyes, not what seems right to you. What seems right is not always right. Let God guide you.

God says, I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye. Do not be like the horse or like the mule, which have no understanding, which must be harnessed with bit and bridle, else they will not come near you” (Psalm 32:8-9 New King James Version). You shouldn’t wait to be disciplined by God before you obey Him. Let the Word of God be your best teacher, not your experience of God’s discipline.

The Word of God and the Holy Spirit work together. Obey the Word of God and the guidance of the Holy Spirit even when it doesn’t make sense to you. Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is man’s all” (Ecclesiastes 12:13 New King James Version).

God’s Word shall achieve the desired result; it shall not fail. For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven, and do not return there, but water the earth, and make it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; it shall not return to Me void, but it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.” (Isaiah 55:11 New King James Version).

Obedience to the Word of God and disobedience to His word have consequences. Deuteronomy 28 contains blessings for diligently obeying the voice of God and curses for disobeying. I’m sure you want the blessing of God. The secret of the blessing of God is obeying Him.

The Word of God is not burdensome, oppressive, or grievous. It is not difficult to obey (1 John 5:3). Will you obey Him? Always remember that obeying the Word of God is for your good (Deuteronomy 10:13). You work against yourself when you disobey the Word of God. The price of disobedience is very high! Live by the Word of God.

TAKE ACTION!

If you are not born again, you need to give your life to Jesus now. I urge you to take the following steps: *Admit that you are a sinner, and cannot save yourself, and repent of your sins. *Confess Jesus as your Lord and Saviour. *Renounce your past way of life – your relationship with the devil and his works. *Invite Jesus into your life. *As a mark of seriousness to mature in the faith, start attending a Bible-believing and Bible-teaching church. There they will teach you how to grow in the Kingdom of God.

Kindly say this prayer now: O Lord God, I come unto You today. I know I am a sinner, and I cannot save myself.  I believe that Jesus is the Son of God who died on the cross to save me and God raised Him on the third day. I repent of my sins and confess Jesus as my Lord and Saviour. I surrender my life to Jesus now and invite Him into my heart. By this prayer, I know I am saved. Thank You, Jesus, for saving me and making me a child of God.

I believe you have said this prayer from your heart. Congratulations! You need to join a Bible-believing and Bible-teaching church in your area where they will teach you how to live your new life in Christ Jesus. I pray that you flourish like a palm tree and grow like a cedar of Lebanon. May you grow into Christ in all things and become all God wants you to be. I will be glad to hear from you. The Lord be with you.

PRAYER POINTS: Father, I repent of not living by Your Word; forgive me. Holy Spirit, help me to live by the Word of God always; let me not walk in disobedience.
