TOPIC: JESUS CHRIST: THE SON OF GOD AND THE SON OF MAN

BY T. O. BANSO

Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split,  and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many. So when the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they feared greatly, saying, ‘Truly this was the Son of God!’” (Matthew 27:51-54 New King James Version).

The death and the resurrection of Jesus Christ support His claim that He is the Son of God and the Son of man. Jesus, during His earthly ministry, often referred to Himself in these two ways, which refer to His divinity and His humanity.

For example, the Bible records Jesus referring to Himself as the Son of man in Matthew 24:27, Mark 8:38, Luke 18:8, and John 1:51, 5:27, 6:53, 12:23, and 13:31. Although, even before He was born, the angel had said that the child Mary, His earthly mother, would give birth to would be the Son of God (Luke 1:32, 35) and John the Baptist also recognized Him as the Son of God (John 1:34), Jesus didn’t go about declaring Himself openly as the Son of God.

However, He confirmed it when Peter said so. “He said to them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ Simon Peter answered and said, ‘You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.’ Jesus answered and said to him, ‘Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven’” (Matthew 16:15-17 New King James Version).

Jesus also confirmed before the Sanhedrin that He was the Son of God: “But Jesus kept silent. And the high priest answered and said to Him, ‘I put You under oath by the living God: Tell us if You are the Christ, the Son of God!’ Jesus said to him, ‘It is as you said. Nevertheless, I say to you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven’” (Matthew 26:63-64 New King James Version). They accused Him of blasphemy because of this. They told Pilate later that, according to their law, Jesus must die because He claimed to be the Son of God (John 19:7).

Jesus is both fully God and fully man. He possessed the attributes of God and man, excluding the sinfulness of man. For example, Jesus wept and was thirsty like humans (Luke 19:41; John 19:28). Even the demons and unclean spirits, unlike the Jewish religious leaders, declared that Jesus was the Son of God (Luke 4:41; Mark 3:11). It is an error to believe that Jesus is only divine and not man, or vice versa. He is one hundred per cent both.

After the trial of Jesus, He was scourged or flogged as Pilate ordered and was nailed to the cross where He yielded up His spirit. But some strange things happened that confirmed that Jesus is the Son of God, as He had said. Note the last phrase in this passage: Truly this was the Son of God!

The centurion and those with him testified that Jesus was the Son of God. The strange events surrounding His death convinced them. The centurion and those with Him reasoned that if Jesus were not the Son of God, the strange events would not have accompanied His death. Their testimony was very significant. They believed what the religious leaders refused to believe, insisting that Jesus must die for claiming to be the Son of God.

It is normal for human beings to die, which shows they are human. But when a man died and was resurrected, as Jesus had promised and did, that should confirm that such a person was more than human.

Jesus walked around like every other man, before His crucifixion, but He was resurrected like no other human being. Significantly, an earthquake accompanied Jesus’ death, and another earthquake announced His resurrection. And behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat on it. His countenance was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow. And the guards shook for fear of him, and became like dead men” (Matthew 28:2-4 New King James Version).

The rolling away of the stone at the entrance of the grave by the angel, cleared the way for anyone to enter to confirm that Jesus was risen. The guards had been posted there by the Chief Priest and the Pharisees to secure the tomb after receiving Pilate’s approval. They wanted to prevent the body of Jesus from being stolen by His disciples, who would then lie that He had been resurrected (Matthew 27:62-65). That was what the Chief Priest and the Pharisees thought the disciples of Jesus would do. But His disciples didn’t have such a plan. The guards couldn’t stop Jesus from coming out of the grave, physically alive. When the guards saw the angel, they were paralyzed with fear and fainted.

Mark 16:1-5 reports what happened after Mary and the other women visited Jesus’ tomb on the third day after His burial: “Now when the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, that they might come and anoint Him.  Very early in the morning, on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen. And they said among themselves, ‘Who will roll away the stone from the door of the tomb for us?’ But when they looked up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away—for it was very large.  And entering the tomb, they saw a young man clothed in a long white robe sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed (New King James Version).

Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Jewish Sanhedrin, the highest ruling body, and a secret disciple of Jesus, who buried Jesus in a tomb hewn out of the rock, had rolled a stone against the door of the tomb (Mark 15:43-46). The stone was to safeguard it as it was the Jewish custom. Joseph was a rich man (Matthew 27:57), and the burial of Jesus in his (Joseph’s) grave was a fulfilment of prophecy. He had done no wrong and had never deceived anyone. But he was buried like a criminal; he was put in a rich man’s grave” (Isaiah 53:9 New Living Translation).

If the stone had not been rolled away, these disciples of Jesus wouldn’t have been able to enter. Therefore, they wouldn’t have known immediately that He had been resurrected. The young man clothed in a long white robe that Mary and the other women met, sitting inside the tomb, told them, “Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He is risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid Him. But go, tell His disciples—and Peter—that He is going before you into Galilee; there you will see Him, as He said to you” (Mark 16:6-7 New King James Version).

God raised His Son from the dead (1 Thessalonians 1:10). He confirmed that He is the Son of God. Paul said in Romans 1:4, “And he was shown to be the Son of God when he was raised from the dead by the power of the Holy Spirit. He is Jesus Christ our Lord” (New Living Translation). If Jesus were only human, He wouldn’t have been resurrected. Indeed, Jesus is the Son of God and the Son of Man.
