WISDOM FOR LIVING DEVOTIONAL

TOPIC: HONOUR MARRIAGE

BY T. O. BANSO

“Give honor to marriage, and remain faithful to one another in marriage. God will surely judge people who are immoral and those who commit adultery” (Hebrews 13:4 New Living Translation).

God ordained or instituted marriage. The Bible says in Genesis 2:18: “And the LORD God said, ‘It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him’” (New King James version).

Marriage is not the invention or concept of any culture. So you don’t copy what obtains in a culture or else you will experience the problem bedevilling their homes due to unscriptural marriages.

Only God and the Bible, not any love novel has the correct instructions, advice, and pattern of marriage. If you structure your marriage after what you watch in love movies or read in love novels, your marriage may end in disaster. If you pattern your marriage after what is dominant in one culture or the other, you will be laying a shaky foundation for your marriage.

One of the things the Bible says about marriage is to honour marriage. Hebrews 13:4 says, “Give honor to marriage, and remain faithful to one another in marriage. God will surely judge people who are immoral and those who commit adultery” (New Living Translation).  One of the reasons that many people and marriages are in trouble today is because they do not honour marriage.

Everyone must honour marriage before and after getting married. Even if you’ve decided not to get married, you should also honour marriage. It is the lack of honour for marriage that leads married people to violate their marriage vows through involvement in extramarital sex. It is also a lack of honour for marriage that causes an unmarried man or woman to sleep with the husband or wife of another person. Due to lack of honour for marriage, some people have broken the homes or marriages of others.

Everyone married or single should honour marriage. The New Century Version renders Hebrews 13:4 thus: The “Marriage should be honoured by everyone, and husband and wife should keep their marriage pure. God will judge as guilty those who take part in sexual sin.”

The Message presents the same scripture this way: “Honor marriage, and guard the sacredness of sexual intimacy between wife and husband. God draws a firm line against casual and illicit sex.”

Everyone should respect marriage. Everyone should think highly of marriage such that everyone ensures that the marriage bed is held sacred and not polluted through marital infidelity as God will judge both fornicators and adulterers.

The Bible says not to commit adultery (Exodus 20:14; Deuteronomy 5;18; Matthew 5;27,  19:18.; Romans 13:9) In the Old Testament, the man that committed adultery with another man’s wife,  the adulterer and the adulteress were to be put to death ( Leviticus 20:10). Adulterers and the sexually immoral shall not enter the Kingdom of heaven (1 Corinthians 6:9-10; Revelation 21:8, 22:15).

Only a person who holds marriage in high esteem will not defile his or her marital bed, will not violate his or marital vows through infidelity and will treat his or her spouse with decorum and honour.  Furthermore, only someone who gives honour to marriage will not defile the marriage bed of another person.

Those who are sexually irresponsible whether single or married, God will punish. Husband and wife must hold marriage in honour before they can enjoy their marriage.

Honour marriage – your marriage and the marriages of others. Honour the marriage institution.

TAKE ACTION!

If you are not born again, you need to give your life to Jesus now. I urge you to take the following steps: *Admit you are a sinner and you cannot save yourself and repent of your sins. *Confess Jesus as your Lord and Saviour. *Renounce your past way of life – your relationship with the devil and his works. *Invite Jesus into your life. *As a mark of seriousness to mature in the faith, start attending a Bible-believing and Bible-teaching church. There they will teach you how to grow in the Kingdom of God.

Kindly say this prayer now: O Lord God, I come unto you today. I know I am a sinner and I cannot save myself. I believe that Jesus is the Son of God who died on the cross to save me and resurrected the third day. I repent of my sins and confess Jesus as my Lord and Saviour. I surrender my life to Jesus now and invite Him into my heart. By this prayer, I know I am saved. Thank you, Jesus, for saving me and making me a child of God.

I believe you have said this prayer from your heart. Congratulations! You will need to join a Bible-believing and Bible-teaching church in your area where they will teach you how to live your new life in Christ Jesus. I pray that you flourish like the palm tree and grow like the cedar of Lebanon. May you grow into Christ in all things and become all God wants you to be. I will be glad to hear from you. The LORD be with you.

PRAYER POINTS:  Father, I commit myself to give honour to marriage. I shall honour my spouse. In the name of Jesus, I shall be faithful to my spouse. I shall not violate my marriage vow through involvement in extramarital sex.
